How to prepare your skin for Halloween (and care for it after)

With Halloween just around the corner, we know you're storming up some hefty ideas so you can win “Best Halloween Costume of 2021.” With a title like that, you know you’re bound to drench your skin in some cheap art makeup from that Halloween store that always seems to pop up for a few months at the end of summer and disappears for the rest of year. And whether you've thought about it or not, we’re here to tell you, you have to up your skincare game if you want a smooth application of beautiful costume makeup AND still want your skin to feel like skin afterwards.

Unless you’re a makeup pro, the Halloween makeup you’re using probably looks and feels similar to a crayon or comes in a small tube so you have no idea what’s squeezing out. Normally, these would be huge NO NO’s for your skin but we’ll let it slide for one night.

Prep:

With cheap makeup products built to destroy your skin, it’s extremely important to prep your skin so you don’t disrupt your moisture barrier and cause irritation, inflammation and acne come November 1st. How do you prep your skin? If you already have a skincare regime in place, you’re ahead of the game! Focus on giving your skin some extra TLC the week leading up to Halloween. For 7 days, be sure to incorporate a toner in your routine. A toner like our Vitamin Infused Toner will give the skin all the vitamins and nutrients it needs to be strong and healthy and it will also balance out the skins pH. Why is this important? A balanced pH creates a strong moisture barrier which reduces inflammation (think acne, blemishes and blackheads) and allows for all other skincare products to absorb and work better - win win!

Then follow it up with a serum designed to calm skin, induce collagen production and prevent breakouts from occurring. Apply a few pumps of our Collagen Revitalizer Serum to enhance your glow and maintain firm, tight skin so you can achieve a flawless Halloween makeup application.

Remove:

The night is over, you won Best Halloween Costume of 2021 and you’re probably a little tipsy. Whatever you do, DO NOT SLEEP WITH YOUR MAKEUP ON! Make sure to purchase a cleansing oil before the big day and keep it by your sink so you do not forget. A cleansing oil is best as it will break up makeup, dirt and whatever else got stuck on your face that night. Follow it up with a gentle cleanser like our Calming Facial Cleanser to hydrate your skin (cause we know it needs it!) and to remove any last traces from that wild night.

Aftercare:

Immediately after cleansing, follow up with a hydrating serum. Our Intensive Hydration Serum is lightweight, fast absorbing and contains hydrating and calming ingredients that will prevent your skin from losing its mind - breakouts! Lastly, lock in that hydration with a thick and creamy moisturizer. Serum Infused Facial Moisturizer will seal in hydration and give your skin the R&R it needs. Continue with this routine for at least 7 days to ensure your moisture barrier returns to normal. During this time, avoid any actives like Vitamin C, Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Retinol as these can irritate and cause more damage to your moisture barrier.
