5 Reasons Why You Might Be Breaking Out

You finally have a skincare routine that you're committed to. You never skip a day and always make sure to remove your makeup before bed. You’re past your teen years filled with questionable skincare advice and hormonal acne….but you’re still breaking out. Here are a few surprising reasons your acne could be acting up.

1. Too many anti-acne products

Ever heard of “too much of a good thing”? Well in this case yes. Too many anti-acne products can definitely cause acne to pop up. The reason being, you’re overloading your skin and taking an aggressive approach at healing the skin when in fact this will only make things worse. Sticking to one key anti-acne product and having the remaining products focus on calming and restoring the skin will allow the products to work effectively, all while maintaining your moisture barrier. Our Spotless Blemish Serum is formulated with 2% salicylic acid to exfoliate, remove dead skin cells, unclog pores and reduce blemishes while allowing a healthy barrier to stay intact.

2. Consuming the wrong foods

You are what you eat! Foods that contain a high glycemic index (white bread, white flour, white rice, processed and refined foods, cookies, chips, some breakfast cereals) are absorbed quickly in the body, spike blood sugar and greatly increase your risk of acne and blemishes. To maintain healthy, strong and clear skin, stick to foods that take a longer time to digest and absorb in the body. This will keep you fuller for a longer period of time and promote a clear complexion. Try consuming berries, green vegetables, lentils, beans, nuts, lean meats and fish more often.

3. Forgetting to clean your face after exercising

A big no no for many reasons. We know how easy it is to finish your workout and carry on with your day but after an intensive cardio or weight lifting session, it’s crucial to wash your face and body to avoid your pores getting clogged. This will only lead to acne and breakouts on your face and body! So jump in that shower, cleanse your skin with a Calming Facial Cleanser and always follow up with a moisturizer to ensure you have smooth and clear skin. We love drenching our skin in our Serum Infused Facial Moisturizer after a relaxing shower.

4. You stopped moisturizing

To speak on our previous point, moisturizing is key if you’re looking to reduce and prevent breakouts. For many years, we were taught that drying out the skin would help blemishes disappear but this is in fact false! Skin that is moisturized, is hydrated and healthy. Healthy skin has a stronger moisture barrier and will be able to utilize any anti-acne ingredients you use in your routine. You’re doing more damage by consistently drying out your skin. Nobody likes that dry, tight feeling so be sure to double down on a good moisturizer when you’re dealing with acne. Our Serum Infused Facial Moisturizer followed by our Afterglow Facial Oil is a great combo at moisturizing skin and keeping your barrier in check.

5. Your hair products are wreaking havoc

Ever wonder why you always have breakouts around your hairline? Well thanks to those hair products keeping your luscious curls intact, they can seep down and clog your pores. The solution to this, try to keep your products far away from your hairline. If this isn’t an option, be sure to wear a wrap around your hairline so that if any hair products seep, they will be caught by the wrap!

With some minor tweaks, you are on your way to clear, glowing skin just in time for the holidays!
